Aspirating smoke detection (ASD) provides a very fast and reliable warning of smoke. Based around a central detection unit, aspirating smoke detectors use powerful fans to draw smoke from the protected area through a network of aspirating pipes and into a detection chamber. Due to their ability to actively draw air from the protected areas, aspirating smoke detectors are able to detect the presence of smoke before it is even visible to the human eye and are unaffected by high or unpredictable airflows.
Before entering the detection chamber, a series of filters remove any contaminants from the sample air to reduce the risk of false alarms and to protect the detection elements, thus making them one of the most reliable detection types on the market today.
22 years ago, Xtralis released the VESDA LaserPlus (VLP) range of detectors. These detectors set the benchmark for detection sensitivity, reliability, longevity, stability and efficiency of operation. VESDA VLP detectors quickly became the most widely used ASD product and has helped ASD evolve from being a specialist, niche technology to a mainstay of the fire detection industry.
VESDA-E VES Introduction
In 2014, Xtralis introduced its new range of ASD; VESDA-E. With this pioneering range of detectors came a new era of ASD and new benchmarks for detection sensitivity, reliability, longevity, stability and efficiency of operation were set.
Within the VESDA-E range the VESDA-E VES, a sector addressable ASD, was introduced.
VESDA-E VES detectors are similar to the flagship VESDA-E VEP detectors. However, they also include a valve mechanism in the inlet manifold to control the airflow from the four sectors (pipes). This valve mechanism allows a single zone to be divided into four separate sectors. This means that in applications such as data rooms, sectors can be used to distinguish between separate ailes, enabling the user to locate the source of smoke by identifying the first sector to reach the alert level. Once the first sector has reached the alarm level, the detector continues to sample from all sectors to monitor fire growth.
VES detectors have four individually configurable alarm levels for each sector (Alert, Action, Fire 1 and Fire 2) providing optimum detection for a wide range of applications.
Built on Xtralis’ Flair detection technology, a revolutionary detection chamber that forms the core of the detector and provides better detection with fewer nuisance alarms, VESDA VES detectors deliver consistent performance over their lifetime via absolute calibration.
How it Works
VESDA-E VES detectors actively draw air from all sectors in use. Once the smoke level reaches the Adaptive Scan Threshold, a Fast Scan is initiated to scan each sector to identify which one is carrying the smoke.
The first sector to reach the alert level is designated as the First Alarm Sector (FAS) and reported to the user. If two or more sectors reach the alert threshold at the same time, the sector with the highest concentration of smoke is assigned as the FAS.
Once the Fast Scan is completed and the FAS has been identified, the VES continues to closely monitor all four sectors to track fire growth and maintain full protection of the area.

VESDA is acknowledged as the leader in reliable early warning smoke detection to protect lives and assets and ensure business continuity in numerous applications across the globe.
Building on the latest VESDA-E platform, Xtralis introduces VESDA-E VES. VESDA-E VES delivers up to four sectors of addressability coupled with very early warning for fast identification of smoke origin. The VES approach delivers a similar solution to four detectors but in one box.
Improved detection performance, reliability, usability and connectivity ensure all users benefit from the new generation of VESDA detectors and VES is also designed to be backward compatible with the VESDA laser scanner.
VESDA-E VES uses the flare detection technology combining the latest laser-based light scattering with optical imaging to deliver a new benchmark in smoke detection with higher sensitivity, better dust rejection, greater stability and improved longevity.
The VES draws air from all sectors in use. If the smoke level reaches the adaptive scan threshold the VES initiates a fast scan to identify which sector is carrying smoke. The first sector to reach the alert level is designated as the First Alarm Sector (FAS) – this sector is signaled to the user. If two or more sectors reach the alert level then the sector with the highest smoke concentration is designated as the First Alarm Sector. Once a fast scan is completed and the FAS identified, the VES continues to closely monitor all four sectors to track fire growth and maintain full protection of the area.
Offering VESDA-E features, VES has been designed to improve the user experience with out-of-box operation through auto-config for smoke and flow configuration and an intuitive 3.5 inch touchscreen display for immediate status reporting and simple diagnostics.
When scanning, the display automatically presents real-time alarm status and smoke level per sector. As part of the VESDA-E family, the VES supports remote access via iVESDA for proactive maintenance and system review.
VESDA-E VES also supports longer pipe runs for increased coverage and convenient detector access, field replaceable parts for easier and faster servicing and reduced installation and monitoring costs reducing the total cost of ownership.
Thoughtfully designed with the past in mind, VES is backward compatible with VESDA VLS. With an identical physical and electrical footprint, the VESDA-E VES allows fast and seamless retrofit with the added benefit of the VESDA-E platform.
VESDA-E VES, the future of sector addressable aspirating smoke detection.
Xtralis, the sooner you know the safer you are.
Backward Compatibility
VESDA-E VES is compatible with existing VESDA installations. VES detectors occupy the same pipe, conduit, electrical connector positioning and mounting footprint as VESDA VLS detectors.
VESDAnet™
VESDA-E devices communicate on VESDAnetTM. VESDAnetTM enables primary reporting, centralised configuration, control maintenance and monitoring via a robust, bidirectional communication network that allows continued redundant operation even during single point wiring failures.
VES detectors are also compatible with existing VESDAnetTM installations allowing monitoring of both VESDA-E and legacy detectors via the latest iVESDA application.
