Linear Heat Detection for Commercial Shipping and Passenger Vessels

Search

Commercial shipping and passenger vessels are used to transport either goods and materials or passengers across the sea. These ships are typically large in size, meaning the amount of passengers on board can be in the thousands and a significant weight of goods and materials can be in transport, therefore, if fire is to occur, the consequences could be disastrous.

What are the Fire Risks Associated with Commercial Shipping and Passenger Vessels?

  • Engine Bays
There are many harmful atmospheric gases present in a ship’s engine bay which can help fuel an intense blaze.
  • Cables
A wide range of cables are likely to be on board, some of which could break or become faulty and produce sparks. If this is to occur, the sparks could come into contact with combustible materials and catch fire.
  • Kitchens
Most ships contain restaurants and kitchens which can heighten the risk of fire as, they too, hold many hazards such as oil spills, open flames and faulty electrical equipment.

What are the Challenges?

There are many challenges to overcome when implementing a reliable fire detection system in commercial ships and passenger vessels. For example, each ship can vary in size and shape and the presence of atmospheric gases makes it hard for standard fire detection to work as effectively and quickly as possible.

What is the Solution?

FyreLine linear heat detection provides the perfect solution for protecting commercial ships and passenger vessels from fire.

FyreLine linear heat detection provides an early warning of fire or overheating equipment and includes a range of heat sensing cables that are able to detect heat anywhere along their length. This is highly beneficial for commercial shipping and passenger vessels as the cables can be placed and adapted throughout the entirety of the ship.

FyreLine linear heat detection can also detect a range of rated temperatures, meaning set temperatures could vary throughout the ship. This is perfect for areas like engine or boiler rooms as they tend to be high temperature areas.

There are two types of FyreLine linear heat detection available, analogue and digital:

FyreLine Analogue

FyreLine Analogue

FyreLine Analogue linear heat detection is able to detect heat anywhere along its length and has been designed for use in a range of environments. FyreLine Analogue continually monitors for changes in temperature and triggers an alarm once the specified temperature determined in the installation process has been met.

FyreLine Analogue also provides the installer with the ability to define a pre-alarm temperature, giving the end user the opportunity to investigate a potential fire before a full alarm is activated.

FyreLine Digital

FyreLine Digital

FyreLine Digital linear heat detection systems offer a cost-effective fixed temperature heat detection solution at rated temperatures of 68°C, 88°C, 105°C or 185°C, that is suited to a variety of applications. Once the cable reaches it rated temperature, an alarm signal is sent to the fire alarm control panel where it triggers the alarm.

Coatings

Eurofyre offer a wide range of coatings for both FyreLine Digital and Analogue linear heat detection to provide the very best fire detection for a range of areas, many of which are perfect for the different areas of a ship. There are five coatings available:

PVC Coated Sensing Cable

PVC Coated Sensing Cable

PVC is the standard coating for both FyreLine Analogue and Digital as it is suitable for most environments. However, PVC should not be used in direct sunlight or around hazardous chemicals for a long period of time.

Nylon Coated Sensing Cable

Nylon Coated Sensing Cable

Nylon coated sensing cables, however, are the perfect solution for areas that commonly hold hazardous hydrocarbons such as fuels, oils or diesel. Nylon cables differ from PVC as they are coloured black and provide suitable UV protection when used in direct sunlight.

High Temperature Coated Sensing Cable

High Temperature Heat Sensing Cable

High temperature coating is only available for FyreLine Digital and is manufactured from two different types of nylon with the outer sheath being a chemical resistant material. This cable is commonly used in high temperature and hazardous areas.

Polypropylene Coated Sensing Cable

Polypropylene Coated Sensing Cable

Polypropylene on the other hand, is only available for FyreLine Analogue systems, however, it is the least common option, although it is tougher than PVC as it is mainly used for applications where strong acids are present.

Stainless Steel Braid Coated Sensing Cable

Stainless Steel Braid

Almost every coated sensing cable can be armoured by placing stainless steel braiding over the outside of the cable. This is the perfect solution for areas where the cable may accidentally become cut or subjected to mechanical abrasion.
