Linear Heat Detection for Low Temperature Environments

4 mins read

Low temperature environments are areas that contain a low ambient temperature such as frozen food processing plants, cryogenic gas processing plants, cold storage freezer warehouses or external areas in extremely cold climates. When implementing a fire detection system in a low temperature environment, installation is similar to normal, however, certain precautionary measures are needed to ensure trouble free installation and operation.

What are the Fire Risks Associated with Low Temperature Environments?

There are many fire risks associated with low temperature environments, such as:

  • Gas Presence
The presence of gas is quite common in cryogenic gas processing plants, especially in cryogenic gas processing plants. If gas is to come into contact with an ignition source the results could be catastrophic.
  • Faulty Equipment
If equipment becomes faulty or is overused, it has a higher chance of sparking and creating fire, especially if combustible materials are present.
  • Dry Air
Due to the ever so low temperatures, moisture tends to be absorbed from the air and, therefore, makes it hard for certain fire detection systems to detect when fire has broken out, meaning fire can spread before anyone has been notified.

What Are the Challenges?

There are a number of challenges to overcome when implementing a reliable fire detection system in low temperature environments. The most common being, how to select the most appropriate system when temperatures can be as low as -40├óÔÇ×ãÆ with very low humidity.

Most conventional fire detection systems are not cable of detecting heat in low temperatures and find it difficult to scan air particles due to lack of moisture.

What is the Solution?

FyreLine linear heat detection is the perfect solution for protecting low temperature environments from fire as it provides an early warning of fire or overheating equipment in even the most challenging environments. FyreLine linear heat detection has the ability to detect heat anywhere along their length and can cope with temperatures as low as -40├óÔÇ×ãÆ.

There are two types of FyreLine linear heat detection available, digital and analogue:

FyreLine Digital

FyreLine Digital

Fyreline Digital linear heat detection provides a cost-effective fixed temperature detection solution at a number of rated temperatures and is, therefore, suited to a number of applications. Once the cable reaches its rated temperature, and alarm signal is sent to the fire alarm control panel where the alarm is raised.

FyreLine Analogue

FyreLine Analogue

FyreLine Analogue linear heat detection has the ability to detect heat anywhere along its length and has been designed for a range of environments. FyreLine Analogue constantly monitors for changes in temperature and triggers an alarm once the specified temperature, determined during the installation process, has been met. FyreLine analogue also allows the user to set a pre-alarm warning, providing the option to investigate a potential fire before the alarm is raised.

Coatings

A number of coatings for Eurofyre’s FyreLine heat sensing cables are available to offer protection in a wide range of environments, especially those where hazardous chemicals, sunlight or strong acids are present and, most importantly, low temperature environments. Each coating has the ability to provide reliable protection for its suited environment and is, therefore, the perfect solution for protecting any building from fire.

FyreLine linear heat detection is available with a range of options, such as:

  • Nylon Coated Sensing Cable
  • PVC Coated Sensing Cable
  • Polypropylene Coated Sensing Cable
  • High Temperature Coated Sensing Cable
  • Stainless Steel Braid Coated Sensing Cable
