Using Wi-Fyre for Domestic Applications

Wi-Fyre provides a diverse and flexible wireless fire detection solution. Whether it is used as part of a new system, or to extend an existing system, Wi-Fyre is well suited to a wide range of applications and has six user-selectable modes of operation including:

  • Conventional
  • Addressable (Collective)
  • ProFyre 2-Wire Addressable
  • ProFyre Addressable
  • Reflective
  • Standalone

Although Wi-Fyre is typically used to form part of a hybrid fire detection system, combining hardwired and wireless fire detection technology, it can be used to create a complete system in residential properties, thanks to its ‘standalone’ mode of operation.

Domestic Fire Detection

Fire alarms save lives. Hundreds of people are killed in their homes each year, and many more suffer serious injuries from residential fires. Therefore, ensuring that a reliable and effective fire detection system is in place is crucial.

Detection Types

Fires can start in any part of a property, with different types of fires producing different types of smoke. With this in mind, it is essential that the right detection type is installed to suit the risks of each particular area:

  • Smoke Alarms – Smoke alarms react to fast burning fires such as those involving clothing or bedding. Therefore, smoke alarms are best suited for use in bedrooms.
  • Optical Thermal Smoke Alarms – Optical thermal smoke alarms are best for detecting slow, smouldering fires such as soft furnishing or electrical fires. This makes optical thermal alarms best suited to landings, hallways, living and dining rooms.
  • Heat Alarms – Heat alarms react to heat alone and are, therefore, not affected by kitchen fumes, exhaust fumes or fumes from chemicals. Accordingly, heat alarms are best suited to kitchens and garages.

Wireless Interconnectivity

Many modern domestic heat and smoke alarms can interconnect wirelessly. This means that when one device detects an issue, all of the connected sounding devices are triggered – providing an advanced warning of fire and more time for the building’s occupants to get to safety.

Using Wi-Fyre for Domestic Applications

When standalone mode is selected, the Wi-Fyre Wireless LCD transponder is transformed into a simple, menu-driven control and indication panel. Therefore, Wi-Fyre can provide all the benefits of traditional domestic heat and smoke detection, including wireless interconnectivity, with the added bonus of being able to view events as well as acknowledge, silence and reset alarm and fault conditions using the transponders LCD display.

Each transponder can communicate with up to 30 devices such as smoke detectors, heat detectors and sounders that are necessary to provide suitable detection for a domestic application. Therefore, Wi-Fyre is suitable for small to very large applications.

In domestic applications, Wi-Fyre transponders must be powered from a Wi-Fyre mains derived power supply unit. This power supply unit is monitored, has a battery backup and will provide a minimum of 72 hours standby in the event of power failure.

Another benefit of using Wi-Fyre for domestic applications is its ability to connect to a remote manned centre or monitoring system using its available relays.

Please note that ‘standalone’ mode is intended for residential use only and must not be used for commercial systems.
