A train station is a facility where trains regularly stop to load or unload passengers or freight. Train stations typically have at least one track-side platform and a station building or depot. Most train stations have other facilities such as ticket booths, waiting rooms, restrooms and, in some cases, shops and restaurants.
Train stations can be anything from modern structures to grand concourses, often boasting elaborate architecture.
Train stations are usually open to the public and some see thousands of visitors passing through each day. Therefore, it is crucial that a suitable and reliable fire detection system is in operation.
Nottingham Railway Station Fire
Earlier this year, fire services were called to Nottingham railway station which had recently been refurbished in a multi-million pound project. The fire was started in a set of women’s toilets on the new side of the station in a suspected arson attack.
The fire broke out at around 06:30 on the morning of Friday 12th January 2018 and smoke and flames could be seen pouring through the roof of the building. It took more than sixty firefighters and nearly twelve hours to bring the blaze under control.
The fire spread rapidly through the building and is reported to have caused an estimated £2m worth of damage. Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire. However, many journeys were delayed and repair works are still not complete.
The Importance of a Reliable Fire Alarm System in Train Stations
Train stations are an important part of the country’s infrastructure. Without them, the nation will likely grind to a halt. Train stations also see large numbers of staff and visitors each day. Therefore, it is imperative that fires are detected quickly in order to evacuate everyone to safety, allow fire services to react before extensive damage is caused, and avoid disruption to the operation of the station.
Most Common Systems Used in Train Stations
Eurofyre, proud British manufacturers of fire detection equipment, provide a range of fire detection systems that are capable of providing reliable, fast and cost-effective fire detection systems for train stations and other applications:
Analogue Addressable Fire Detection Systems
Analogue addressable fire detection provides intelligent fire detection that can provide the exact location of any fires, smoke, heat, contamination or faults and report the status of each device that is connected to the system.
- ProFyre A4 Analogue Addressable Fire Alarm System (large properties)
Perfect for larger properties, the ProFyre A4 fire detection system supports a maximum of 8 loops with up to 250 devices per loop. - ProFyre A2 Analogue Addressable Fire Alarm System (medium size properties)
ProFyre A2 fire alarm systems are suitable for medium properties that require less than 256 devices, eight zones and 2 loops.
Conventional Fire Detection System
Conventional fire alarm systems provide a cost-effective solution for small to medium applications. A conventional system will indicate a zone, or area, of a building where a detector has been triggered, but cannot provide an accurate location.
- ProFyre C8 Conventional Fire Detection System (small properties)
The ProFyre C8 provides cost-effective detection for small properties that require up to 8 zones. - ProFyre C24 Conventional Fire Detection System (medium properties)
Profyre C24 fire detection systems provide cost-effective detection for medium properties that require up to 24 zones. C24 panels are fully-featured, expandable and easy to install.
2-Wire Addressable Fire Detection System
2-wire addressable fire detection systems offer all the benefits of analogue addressable systems, but with the simplicity of a conventional system.
- ProFyre T8 2-Wire Addressable Fire Alarm System (small to medium properties)
Profyre T8 fire alarm systems can accommodate up to 8 radial zones or 1 single loop. All devices on the T8 system share and receive power over just two wires.
Open protocol
Eurofyre believes that the owner of the fire alarm should have the option to choose their own installer or maintainer and complete control of how the system is managed. Therefore, our fire alarm systems are built on an open protocol, giving the owner complete freedom of choice.
