Overview
Beam detectors use a projected beam of light to detect smoke across large areas. Beam detection is commonly used in large, open areas where standard point smoke detectors would be uneconomical or ineffective.
In recent years, Xtralis, the company that revolutionsed aspirating smoke detection with its VESDA systems, has reinvented beam detection with its Open-Area Smoke Imaging Detection (OSID) range of beam detectors.
OSID provides reliable, cost-effective smoke detection for open spaces where there are unique fire detection challenges and where very early warning is not always the priority.
The OSID range uses imaging technology based on a CMOS imager, equivalent to hundreds of thousands of photocells, to deliver fast installation and superior detection performance. The CMOS imager finds and locks on to its detection target, eliminating building movement issues and enabling an automated set up process that reduces installation time from hours to minutes. The CMOS imager is also unaffected by foreign object intrusion and sunlight saturation, drastically reducing nuisance alarms.
OSID provides reliable smoke detection that is designed for rapid installation and reliable operation during the lifetime of the detector, reducing installation time, maintenance costs and total cost of ownership.
Typical Applications
OSID Dual Ended
OSID-DE (Dual Ended) uses a CMOS sensor with hardwired or battery-powered emitters roughly aligned on the opposite wall within the protected area. The emitter sends both infrared and ultraviolet coded light signals to the imager. The innovative use of dual light frequencies allows the OSID-DE to discriminate between real smoke and other solid objects offering high resistance to sudden and transient dust and steam clouds which drastically reduces false alarms.
OSID Reflective
OSID Reflective (OSID-RE) is the simplest form of the OSID range and uses an imager and a reflector. It operates on the principle of light obscuration using an infrared beam and smart analysis technology to provide reliable detection of smoke. Only the imager requires power and connection to the fire alarm control panel and only requires a single standard reflector on the opposite wall.
