Overview
The Apollo Series 65 Optical Smoke Detector uses light sensing technology to detect smoke entering its detection chamber.
It is housed in a moulded, self-extinguishing white polycarbonate enclosure with wind-resistant smoke inlets. The sensing chambers design prevents penetration of ambient light and has an insect resistant cover.
In the detection chamber, an infrared LED is positioned at an obtuse angle to a photo-diode. The LED emits a burst of collimated light that, under normal conditions, does not reach the diode. When smoke enters the chamber, the light from the LED is scattered onto the photo-diode. When this happens, the detector verifies the alarm by emitting two more bursts of light. If the light is still scattered, an alarm is triggered.
An external LED turns red when the detector is in an alarm state.
